Keeping Faith: Aphrodite’s Mirror

2023

‘Luscious mother of pearl lustre sits atop the South Australian terracotta clay constantly changing as the light moves over its surface. Deep and murky in its colouring. Contrasted next to a delicate creamy engobe. Dry and revealing.. Pinches embedded into vessels built coil by coil, reference time passing and growth emerging. Shells imprinted and shaped in clay connect me to ancient practices.

Paying homage to Aphrodite, the greek goddess of love and fertility, ‘Keeping Faith’ was made in the depths of early pregnancy loss, pregnancy and early postpartum. A journey of grief, uncertainty/fear, excitement and awe of the pure magic of creating and bringing life into the world. This work is love letter and a call for inner strength in sculptural form to mother nature and every other woman who had birthed before me.

Slab built from a single piece of clay, with coiled pinched and shell imprint decorations, made in South Australian Terracotta clay, finished in a creamy dry matte engobe with clear gloss glaze and mother of pearl lustre details.’
